Early detection and treatment is proven to reduce the effects of breast cancer. About 250,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, most over age 40. It's the second highest cause of cancer deaths among women, and men represent about one percent of cases.
A mammogram is a breast X-ray performed by a specially trained technologist to detect abnormalities and help physicians determine overall breast health. You may be able to feel a breast lump that is about the size of a quarter, but a mammogram can generally reveal a lump as small as a pencil eraser. Using special equipment that gently compresses the breast tissue, this test takes little time and provides clear, high-quality X-ray images.
Women over 40 are advised to have a mammogram to screen for breast cancer every year. You may need to start having mammograms earlier and mor frequentlyl if you have had breast cncer, breast problems or a family history of breast cancer. Two types of mammograpms are available at Fairview Maple Grove Medical Center:
Screening Mammograms
Screening mammograms are suitable if you have no breast health symptoms. They generally take 10-15 minutes to perform.
Diagnostic Mammograms
Diagnostic mammograms are for men and women who have breast lumps, pain or discharge.
